Breed Komondor

Komondor

The name “Komondor” was first used to denote the Hungarian shepherd dogs back in the year 1544 in poems about the King Astiagis:

"Hirte schaut mit ihm, das Kind stillend,
ein trächtiger Komondor sie umringend"

Amos Comenius in wrote in 1673: “The Komondors are guarding the herds”.

Komondors are also referred to as the leaders.

In 1815, Petke Ferentz described this dog breed in his book “Natural sciences”. He described the build of the body, nature, toughness, and firmness of character.

The truth lies in that up to the modern times, no changes have been implemented in the description.

What affected development of Komondors and what was the purpose of shepherds?

This breed originated in the steppes of Asia, where there are very rough climate conditions for people and animals alike – they had to be able to bear temperatures ranging from +30 to - 40 degrees Celsius.

The shepherds needed very sturdy defenders both for themselves and for the cattle.

The coat of Komondors had to protect, firstly, the dogs from poor weather conditions, as well as from wolf and bear bites.

Each owner of a Komondor should know that they are holding a very valuable treasure, because the Komondors have preserved their image and character, their shape and endurance, their vigilance and firmness, strength and love for us, the people, over the course of thousands of years.

Komondor’s Task

Their task is to protect everything and everybody they trust.

They are on duty day and night.

Usually they attack without noise, they run at the enemy, knock it off its feet, and keep watch. They bite the enemy only if the latter starts resisting. After that, they wait for the master to arrive.

If Komondor has started barking, it means that they want to show that something is wrong.

Unfortunately, it can happen that the outsiders cannot appreciate this dog.

They successfully and without particular effort can guard large fenced-in objects, factory territories, etc.

Who does Komondor suit?

A person, who decides to get a Komondor, must be ready for something special.

They must be individualists, they must treat Komondor with kindness and consistently, as well as must be ready for close affection.

To a certain extent, it can be compared to marriage:

“We’ll be together in sadness and happiness”

Conditions for Keeping Komondors

The best option – a house with a garden. It’s not necessary to have a big garden, what matters is that the dog lived in the open air, but they also need the communication with the family.

Training and dealing with them are the same as with other dog breeds.

The Komondors memorise rather quickly such orders as “sit”, “down”, “stay”, but they do not want to fetch.

The Komondor breed dogs, unfortunately, are not well-known. Also, they are often undervalued or erroneously interpreted. From my own experience I can definitely say that these large, impressive dogs are an extremely affectionate breed, towards their owner they show never-ending love, while keeping in mind their task – to be a guard dog.

Komondor requires no more care than any other dog breed contrary to a common opinion. If you feed and keep them, and care for them as needed, then you will enjoy these beautiful, courageous, and trustworthy animals very much.

To conclude, I would like to add that this breed is not suitable at all for keeping in an apartment.
It needs a house with a garden and yard!
